SEARCH ENGINE MARKETING: What to look forward to in 2009
With 2008 finishing off on a severe economic downturn, online advertisers still sailed through the bad times, due to their tighter rein on how they could still keep the ROI level balanced by keeping a tab on online spends.
Old adage about opportunity in adversity still hold true, and overall interactive marketing and advertising are still expected to rise, albeit not quite as robustly as predicted earlier.

Please find some predictions for the Online Marketing space in 2009.
- SEO is about to stay highly Competitive - In a sluggish economy, the best bet online is still a free click. Next year, there can be an onslaught of companies trying to competitively position themselves for these free clicks. You can expect a frenzy of activity, lots of new entrants, and the utilization of underhanded, cut-throat, and even black-hat tactics. Competition is going to be a lot tougher with very limited marketing space to vie for, where only the top ten results matter and companies will be ready to resort to beg-borrow-or-steal techniques for survival.
- MORE Internet Marketing Companies on cards - There are chances of small and medium sized internet marketing companies mushrooming and also some old ailing and languishing ones are likely to die or gulped by the market biggies. However the word of caution for advertisers is to make a painstaking choice and look at the credentials and past record of the company.
- Social Media - Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Tagged, Digg, StumbleUpon, Squiddo, de.licio.us, and MySpace, as these sites continue to grow in popularity, the Industry will find a better way to market and standardize the practice in 2009, allowing for all online marketers to participate in Social Media Marketing with the same ease that they are currently able to do with search.
- Era of BIG websites - No longer will you be basking in easily with a 20-30 pages website and having all the laughs on search engine real estate. Anyone trying to compete effectively online will absolutely need to have a giant website with thousands of pages ready, willing and able to be indexed on the web. In SEO, size does matter and next year large sites will become the standard that all participants in the game will need to have, if they are to survive.
- Analytics 2.0? - May be yes, seeing the gaps and non standard way of tracking results, that is the call of the time. May be 2010 will be the year of standards, does not matter it is initiated by Omniture or Google Analytics.
- Search at your hand - The biggest change in 2009 and beyond is predicted to be the device consumers search from will start to matter even more than which engine they use. New mobile devices and platforms such as the iPhone and Google Android are focused on improving the search and Web experience. This will fuel searches from mobile devices; iPhone users enter a disproportionate number of mobile search queries, though other devices are catching up.
- Give them a miss... - Vertical search ,yes it had sucked in long back and is likely to sink in further. Second in the list, may be mobile marketing, it was much hyped but did not catch on as expected. Being too much worried about Yahoo and MSN results could be avoided to some extent as long as there are too much hang ups in securing them.
