.htaccess file – A file with one or more configuration directives placed in a web site document directory. The directives apply to that directory and all subdirectories.
Hallway pages - Most search engines which scour the internet for new web pages to add to their database give better search engine rankings to pages they "found" than pages that were submitted on the "Add URL" page. Hallway pages are basically a list of links to all the pages in a website that the designer wants indexed by search engines. By submitting the Hallway page, website gets indexed faster, and gets better rankings.
Header - The part of the http request and response that is sent before the actual content, and that contains meta-information describing the content.
Hidden input tags: - These are the tags which visitors can not see when visiting your site. Some search engines index them.
Hidden text - Text that is visible to the search engines but hidden to a user. It is traditionally accomplished by coloring a block of HTML text the same color as the background color of the page. It is primarily used for the purpose of including extra keywords in the page without distorting the aesthetics of the page. Search engines penalize or ignore such practices.
Hit – The request or retrieval of any item located within a web page. For example, if a user enters a web page with 5 pictures on it, it would be counted as 6 “hits.” One hit is counted for the web page itself, and another 5 hits count for the pictures
Home Page - Main page of a Web website, the page designated as the main point of entry of a Web website. Typically, it welcomes you and introduces the purpose of the site, or the organization sponsoring it, and then provides links to the lower-level pages of the site.
HTML - Hypertext Markup Language is a coding language used to make hypertext documents for use on the Web. HTML resembles old-fashioned typesetting code, where a block of text is surrounded by codes that indicate how it should appear. HTML allows text to be "linked" to another file on the Internet.
HTML Banner - Banner ad using HTML elements, often including interactive forms instead of (or in addition to) standard graphical elements.
HTML Email - email that is formatted using Hypertext Markup Language, as opposed to plain text email.
HTTP – Stands for "Hypertext Transfer Protocol".
HTTPS – Stands for "Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure".
Hypertext - Any text that that can be chosen by a reader and which causes another document to be retrieved and displayed.
Hyperlink - This is the clickable link in text or graphics on a web page that takes you to another place on the same page, another page or a whole other site. It is the single most powerful and important function of online communications. Hyperlinks are revolutionizing the way the world gets its information.
